THE SPRAY TAN GUIDE
To ensure your spray tan lasts as long as possible and you’re able to maintain your glow, follow our spray tan prep, rinse and aftercare instructions.
-
Prepare your body for tanning by exfoliating & moisturizing 24 hours in advance. Pay special attention to elbows, knees, ankles, and any areas that tend to get dry.
If youwax or shave, make sure to do this at least 48 hours prior to your appointment. As a result, your pores will have time to close, preventing dark spots!
Avoid bar soaps, high pH shower products, oil based products, and in-shower moisturizers for 24 hours before your tan. The barrier created by these products may prevent the fast acting tanning agents from developing on your skin.
Don’t apply moisturizer, perfume, deodorant or makeup on the day of your appointment. This may cause discoloration or a patchy tan result that won’t last as long.
Make sure your skin is clean and dry before your appointment.
Come prepared with loose clothing to put on after your appointment.
-
Wait 1-6 hours before rinsing to achieve your desired glow:
For a light tan wait 1-2 hours.
For a medium tan wait 3-4 hours.
For a darker tan wait 5-6 hours.
Do not leave initial tan on for longer than 6 hours — the results may be unnatural.
After your initial rinse it may look like your tan is gone — don’t worry! It takes 12-24 hours for your tan to fully develop after your rinse.
-
Wait 8-12 hours before rinsing to achieve your desired glow.
Allow 24 hours to see full color development.
Avoid getting wet for at least 8 hours after application.
Do not leave initial tan on for longer than 12 hours — the results may be unnatural.
-
Wait 12-24 hours before rinsing to achieve your desired glow.
Your tan will begin to develop within 2-4 hours after application
Full tanning results develop within 24 hours.
Avoid getting wet for at least 24 hours after application.
Do not leave initial tan on for longer than 24 hours before you rinse — the results may be unnatural.
-
Stay away from anything wet until your first shower; this means no work outs, no cleaning, no lotions, no sweating etc.
Let the tan develop for the recommended time, then shower quickly for 45 seconds.
Use lukewarm water. It is important not to use hot water while developing the tan because it stops the activation of your tan.
During the first 24 hours after your treatment, do not use shower gels or shampoos unless you got the 24 hour tan. Just gently use your hand to thoroughly rinse bronzer off until the water is clear.
Pat dry and avoid any rubbing with the towel when you are drying off.
Leave your skin damp and apply a spray tan friendly moisturizer while your skin is still damp. We love CeraVe and Lubriderm.
-
MOISTURIZATION:
Moisturizing in the morning and evening is recommended. We love the following: CeraVe and Lubriderm. Stay hydrated! Drink plenty of water, too!
PROTECTION:
To get the most out of your tan, avoid swimming, long showers, baths, steam rooms, and saunas.
Avoid harsh chemicals such as chlorine, products containing acids, massages, fashion tape, bandages, and anything else that may strip your tan
Don’t exfoliate until you’re ready to take your tan off completely.
FREQUENTLY ASKED
GENERAL QUESTIONS
-
The principle tanning agent used in all self-tanning formulas is Dihydroxyacetone (DHA). This ingredient does not produce a “real tan” by increasing the skin’s melanin levels, rather it creates a tanned appearance by developing a brown color on the surface of the skin. The action of DHA is limited to the upper layer of the skin and involves a reaction between DHA and skin proteins and oxygen that produces brown compounds.
This process is similar to what occurs when you slice open an apple and the surface of the apple browns when it’s exposed to the oxygen in the air. The development of color takes anywhere from 2 to 4 hours and the intensity of color is dependent upon the DHA Concentration In The product as well as each tanner’s individual skin characteristics. the color developed by the DHA usually lasts 5 to 7 days and begins to fade as the top layer of the skin naturally exfoliates.
-
DHA is an acronym for dihydroxyacetone. DHA is the active ingredient found in all sunless tanning products. It is a simple carbohydrate that is primarily used as an ingredient in sunless tanning products. It is often derived from plant sources such as sugar beets and sugar cane, and by the fermentation of glycerin. DHA does not make your skin cells darker in pigmentation, but rather reacts with the proteins and amino acids found in the top layer of your skin to create a darkening effect or sunless tan.
-
The longevity of the spray tan depends on the skin’s natural exfoliation process, the before and after care practiced, and the activities you partake in after the spray tan (swimming, hot yoga, saunas, hot tubs etc. will limit the lifespan of your spray tan.)
-
If you are using a spray solution with a cosmetic bronzer (water-soluble make-up), some of the bronze color may rub off on clothing or bed sheets. This is most likely to happen when you get dressed immediately after tanning. To minimize the chance of the bronzers transferring to clothing, we recommend you wear loose-fitting, darker clothes after your spray session.
Try to refrain from physical exertion that could result in your sweating until you shower and wash off the cosmetic bronzers. all cosmetic bronzers used within Norvell products are water-soluble. therefore, in most cases, the color will come out of clothing in the wash. It is however important to note bronzers may stain light hair, wool, spandex, lycra, silks or other fine fabrics. If product comes into contact with hands or clothing rinse immediately.
-
Short answer, sometimes. If you are thoroughly rinsing during your initial rinse, you should have
little to no transfer. When transfer does occur the solutions wash out easily.
-
All of our solutions have cosmetic bronzers in them. You will appear tan when you leave but it is not your final result. This bronzer will be rinsed and your tan will continue to develop for an extended period of time. Trust the process.
-
Results will vary based on the individual’s skin type and pH balance. Our solutions have been formulated to provide a color that will be appealing to the majority of sunless tanners, and a variety of shades will allow you to find the perfect solution for your individual needs. The Bronzing Bar all the tools needed to achieve the custom color you so desire!
-
When used as recommended, our sunless tanning solutions are formulated to give a natural color. Our spray specialists are thoroughly trained to choose the solutions that will best suit your skin tone and cancel out any orange. If rinse times are not followed as directed, there is a higher chance of your tan turning out a different color than desired.
-
We recommend avoiding these situations for the first 48 hours following your spray tan. Chlorinated pools and spas can increase the rate in which the skin exfoliates causing the tan to wear and fade rapidly.
-
Yes. Our solutions do not contain any SPF. WEAR YOUR SPF!!!
-
What is darker will stay darker and what is lighter, stays lighter in contrast.
-
Item The Bronzing Bar has received no feedback from any medical authority that would indicate a risk to a diabetic person, however, as you would before using any product as a diabetic person, we recommend each customer consult their physician before receiving a DHA spray tan application.
-
Yes. Our sunless solution does work on the affected areas, However, it is important to remember the skin that is lighter “tans” and the unaffected skin areas also tan, therefore they will remain different colors. While both areas do achieve a sunless tan, they will appear “two toned” when finished. Our color is a blend of the natural skin color and the sunless color.
Sunless color is not a “cover-up”, but rather a blend. customers looking to darken only the lighter skin will need to take care and apply solution to these areas only, and may be best served with any of the retail self-tanning applications available at The Bronzing Bar.
-
If you are concerned with a possible allergic or skin reaction to the solution we recommend you first patch test a small area of the skin prior to a full body session. The Bronzing Bar will be happy to arrange a pre-session patch test before scheduling a full body session.

While TBB sprays pregnant women everyday, we still recommend consulting your physician for approval first.

PREGNANCY INFORMATION
Our sunless spray solutions are non-toxic, and utilize only the best DHA which has been rigorously tested before entering any of our formulations.
All of our solutions are:
— Paraben free
— Gluten free
— Sulfate free
— Nut-allergen free
— Propylene glycol free
— Phthalates free
— Synthetic fragrance free.
With all of the above being said, The Bronzing Bar does not staff licensed physicians, therefore, as you would before using any product as an expectant mother, we recommend each customer consult with their personal physician before receiving a DHA sunless spray tan application.
Although there are no known dangers of using tanning products, they can sometimes cause an allergic reaction, particularly during pregnancy when hormone levels are high and skin becomes more sensitive. As with all tanning treatments, it is recommended that a patch test is undertaken at least 24 hours before a tanning treatment and that this is of paramount importance for pregnant women.
We always advise our pregnant clients to consult their doctors prior to getting a spray tan, just to be on the safe side!
